Kalvola [ kɑlvɔlɑ ] is a former municipality in the southern Finnish landscape Kanta-Häme . At the beginning of 2009 it was incorporated into the city of Hämeenlinna together with the communities of Hauho , Lammi , Renko and Tuulos .

Kalvola is located 20 km northwest of the city center of Hämeenlinna and 55 km southeast of Tampere . The distance to the capital Helsinki is 125 km. The highway from Helsinki to Tampere (State Road 3 / European Route 12) and the railway line from Helsinki via Tampere to Oulu cross Kalvola. The community center of Kalvola was the place Iittala , is known for the resident glass design manufacturer Iittala of the same name . In addition to Iittala, the former municipality of Kalvola also includes the villages Ahlajärvi, Heinu, Hietajärvi, Hitumaa, Kanajärvi, Kankaanpää, Kautio, Keikkala, Kotkajärvi, Kutila, Kutinen, Kuurila, Könnölä, Lintumajani, Sauaval, Niemi, Pa, Ojajenirsvi , Sittala, Sääksniemi, Taljala, Unonen and Rimmilä. The municipality got its name after the lake Kalvolanjärvi. The area of the municipality of Kalvola was 338.20 km² (37.66 km² of which were inland waters). The last population was 3,587.

The area of Kalvola is separated from the rest of the municipality of Hämeenlinnas by the neighboring municipality of Hattula . Because according to the Finnish municipal law only municipalities that have a common border can merge, Hattula had to cede a smaller area of 27 km² to form a corridor between Hämeenlinna and Kalvola. De facto, Kalvola is still an exclave , because the road connection from the center of Hämeenlinna to Kalvola leads via Hattula.

The stone church of Kalvola was built between 1919 and 1921. A wooden church stood in its place in the Middle Ages , the stone sacristy of which has been preserved from around 1500. Other sights in Kalvola are the Kankainen and Niemi manors.

On March 15, 1957, the Kuurila railway accident occurred not far from here .
