history

Hauho Church

The oldest written mention of Hauho dates back to 1329. At that time the inhabitants were of Hauho because of unpaid church tax of four squirrel skins - then the usual currency in Finland - with the excommunication occupied. From now on, masses were no longer allowed to be read in Hauho, no children were baptized and no dead could be blessed. Marriages had to be concluded in the cemetery and the residents were not allowed to shave their beard or hair or greet each other. It is therefore not surprising that the residents of Hauho soon gave in and paid their taxes. The four silver squirrels in the municipality's coat of arms also remind of this incident.

The stone church of Hauho was built at the beginning of the 16th century. The area around the church, the old church village, with its wooden buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries and its narrow streets, is one of the best preserved village ensembles in Finland.
