Athanasios Diakos ( Greek Αθανάσιος Διάκος ; * 1788 in Phocis ; † April 24, 1821 ) was a Greek freedom fighter and national hero during the Greek Revolution .

Athanasios Diakos real name is Athanasios Nikolaos Massavetas (Greek Αθανάσιος Νικόλαος Μασσαβέτας). He was a member of the Philiki Etaireia ( Society of Friends ). At the beginning of the Greek Revolution in early 1821 he fought with an army of 1500 men in the battle of Thermopylae in eastern Greece against the 8000 strong Ottomans . He fell into captivity in Alamana near Thermopylae by the Ottomans, who had him executed. His death was celebrated in folk songs and also edited dramatically .
