Barrett Hayton (born June 9, 2000 in Peterborough , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Arizona Coyotes in the National Hockey League since July 2018 and has played there since October 2019 in the position of the center .

Career

Barrett Hayton was born in Peterborough and played for the Toronto Red Wings in his youth . For the 2016/17 season he moved to the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), the highest-ranking junior league in his home province, to the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds , who selected him in ninth position in the 2016 OHL Priority Selection . After only an average rookie year, the Canadian established himself in the 2017/18 season with 60 points from 63 games in the OHL. He was also honored with the Bobby Smith Trophy for his academic achievements. Despite a point average of almost 1.0 per game, he was not one of the best 50 scorers in the league and was nevertheless considered in fifth position by the Arizona Coyotes in the subsequent NHL Entry Draft 2018 , as his strengths were primarily seen as a defensive center. In July 2018, the Coyotes provided him with an entry-level contract before moving to Sault Ste for another year. Marie returned and there took over the office of team captain . At the same time, he increased his personal statistics again significantly to 66 scorer points from only 39 games.

As part of the preparation for the 2019/20 season, Hayton earned a place in the Coyotes squad and made his debut in the National Hockey League (NHL) in October 2019 . Ultimately, however, he played only 20 NHL games this season due to his participation in the U20 World Cup and the shoulder injury he suffered.

International

Hayton gained his first international experience in the context of the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2016 , in which he finished fourth with the Canada White team . In the U18 age group, he won the gold medal with the Canadian selection at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament 2017 . He then represented his home country with the Canadian U20 national team at the 2019 U20 World Cup , which finished the team in sixth place. In the following year, the attacker led the U20 of his home country as captain to the gold medal at the U20 World Cup 2020 , scored the most goals (6) and scorer points (12) of his team and was also elected to the all-star team of the tournament.
