Darcy Kuemper (born May 5, 1990 in Saskatoon , Saskatchewan ) is a Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper who has been under contract with the Arizona Coyotes in the National Hockey League since February 2018 .
Career
Kuemper started his career with Saskatoon Contacts in 2006 and reached the playoffs with his team. He played a playoff game for the Spokane Chiefs in the WHL . The following season he guarded the goal of the Saskatoon Blazers .
For the new season he moved to the Red Deer Rebels in the WHL. In January 2010 he was appointed goalkeeper week of the Canadian Hockey League (CHL), the umbrella organization of the Canadian junior leagues, and was appointed to the WHL (East) Second All-Star Team. In the 2009/10 season he made a brief stint in the AHL with the Houston Eros .
In 2009 he was selected by the Minnesota Wild in the NHL Entry Draft in the 6th round at the total of 161st position.
The 2010/11 season he was completely between the posts with the Rebels. This season was very successful for Kuemper, he finished the season with the lowest goals against goals (1.86) and the highest catch rate (93.3%) of all goalkeepers in the WHL. This was followed by the appointment to the WHL (East) First All-Star Team and several appointments as goalkeeper of the week of the CHL. At the end of the season, he received the Four Broncos Memorial Trophy for Player of the Year and the Del Wilson Trophy for Goalkeeper of the Year of the WHL and was also named Goalkeeper of the Year for the CHL .
The following season, Kuemper moved to the Houston Eros and also played some games for the Ontario Reign in the ECHL . He was named the AHL Player of the Week and Rookie of the Month once in December.
On April 18, 2013 Kuemper made his debut in the NHL when the Wild away game with the San Jose Sharks . Since then he has acted as a backup and is regularly used by the game and their farm team , the Iowa Wild .
After six years in the organization of the Wild, his contract was not extended after the 2016/17 season, so that the Canadian joined the Los Angeles Kings as a free agent in July 2017 . There it was regularly used as a backup for Jonathan Quick before the Kings handed it over to the Arizona Coyotes in February 2018 and Tobias Rieder and Scott Wedgewood received in return . At the same time, Kuemper signed a new two-year contract in Arizona. After the season he made his debut in the 2018 World Cup for the Canadian national team , where he finished fourth with the team.
In the 2018/19 season, Kuemper rose to the Coyotes' regular goalkeeper due to an injury to Antti Raanta and played 55 games in which he recorded five shutouts and 27 wins, each of which was NHL best for him.
