The first third, in which no goals were scored, offered a Winter Classic premiere: Shawn Thornton and Daniel Carcillo fought the first fistfight in the history of an open-air game in the NHL. Both teams could only develop a few scoring opportunities. In the 15th minute, Philadelphia's Jeff Carter failed to goalkeeper Tim Thomas . In return, Michael Leighton parried a shot from Boston's Derek Morris off the blue line. One minute before the end of the third the Flyers could not use another chance.

After 24:42 minutes, Danny Syvret scored the opening goal for the Philadelphia Flyers . Bruins goalkeeper Thomas had been distracted by his opponent Scott Hartnell , whom he tried to push away, while Syvret pulled off the blue line and hit through Thomas's schooners into the goal. Claude Giroux could have increased it to 2-0 after a pass from Mike Richards in front of Thomas, but the goalkeeper blocked his shot. Another chance for the Flyers had Arron Asham , who ran up to Tim Thomas in the 34th minute after the Bruins lost the puck. After 40 minutes the Philadelphia Flyers were leading 1-0, but they could have taken a much higher lead thanks to the clearer chances.

At the beginning of the third period, Boston's Marco Sturm had a chance when he was still outnumbered in the neutral third just behind the center line and put Michael Leighton to the test. The puck passed through Leighton's schooner, but only spun against the outer post. In return, Scott Hartnell checked Boston's Tim Thomas, but he was able to fend off. Only after 57:42 minutes did the Bruins equalize to 1: 1. They had established themselves in the majority in the third of the guests and cleared Derek Morris, who could pass in front of goal from a half-right position. There Mark Recchi was ready and scored untenable for Leighton to 1-1.

In extra time , the Flyers initially had a series of chances, but Bruins goalie Tim Thomas was able to fend off. After 1:57 minutes, Marco Sturm scored the winning goal in a return move when he was able to fit a pass from Patrice Bergeron from close range past Flyers goalkeeper Michael Leighton.
