Derek Terrence Morris (born August 24, 1978 in Edmonton , Alberta ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player who played 1144 games for the Calgary Flames , Colorado Avalanche , Phoenix Coyotes , New York Rangers and Boston between 1995 and 2014 Bruins has played in the National Hockey League on the position of defender . Morris celebrated his greatest career success in the jersey of the Canadian national team by winning the gold medal at the 2004 World Cup .
Career
Morris played in his junior days in the Canadian Junior League Western Hockey League for the Regina Pats . He remained loyal to them for two seasons and reached the play-offs every year .
After Morris was selected in the first round of the 1996 NHL Entry Draft in 13th place by the Calgary Flames , they brought him to their farm team in the American Hockey League for the first time at the end of the 1996/97 season . At the Saint John Flames , the defender did well. From the 1997/98 season he was a permanent member of the Calgary Flames squad. In March 2002, a puck deflected by him from the shot of the opposing center Espen Knutsen led to the death of 13-year-old Brittanie Cecil .
Overall, the defender remained until the end of the 2001/02 season with the team from the Olympic city of 1988, before he was transferred to the Colorado Avalanche in October 2002 together with Dean McAmmond and Jeff Shantz . In return, Chris Drury and Stéphane Yelle moved to Calgary. In his first year, Morris completed his best playing time in terms of points in the NHL. Nevertheless, he left the team from Denver in the course of the 2003/04 game year when he moved with Keith Ballard to the Phoenix Coyotes , who gave up Finnish defender Ossi Väänänen , striker Chris Gratton and a draft option to Colorado.
The Canadians remained five years with the Coyotes, only interrupted by lockout - 2004/05 season in which he completely paused. In March 2009, a few months before his contract expired, the franchise transferred him from Arizona to the New York Rangers , who sent Nigel Dawes , Dmitri Kalinin and Petr Průcha to Phoenix for it. After signing a contract with the Boston Bruins in the summer of 2009 , the Coyotes brought him back to Arizona in a transfer deal in March 2010.
International
On the international stage, Morris represented his home country three times. After failing to win a medal with Canada at the 1999 and 2001 World Championships, he contributed five assists when he won the 2004 World Cup .
