NHL Centennial Classic
The NHL Centennial Classic was an outdoor ice hockey game played on January 1, 2017 as part of the 2016/17 season of the National Hockey League (NHL). The game was played on the occasion of the league's 100th anniversary in Toronto at BMO Field between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Detroit Red Wings . The game ended 5-4 after extra time for Toronto.

With the Toronto Maple Leafs, a franchise was allowed to host the anniversary game, which is the only one besides the Canadiens de Montréal that has been represented in the league since the NHL was founded. To get good TV ratings, an American team should be your opponent.
Finally, the Detroit Red Wings were selected, which, like the Maple Leafs, are part of the Original Six , the six teams that have been represented in it since the National Hockey League gained exclusive rights to play the Stanley Cup.
