Shawn Thornton (born July 23, 1977 in Oshawa , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and current official. The winger made 810 games in the National Hockey League for the Chicago Blackhawks , Anaheim Ducks , Boston Bruins and Florida Panthers . As a classic enforcer , Thornton won the Stanley Cup with Anaheim in 2007 and with Boston in 2011 . After the end of his active career, he moved to the management of the Florida Panthers.
Career
The 1.85 m tall winger began his professional career with the Peterborough Petes in the Canadian Junior League OHL , before he was selected ( drafted ) in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft as 190th in the seventh round of the Toronto Maple Leafs .
In the coming season , the Maple Leafs used the right-handed shooter in their farm team , the St. John's Maple Leafs , in the American Hockey League , but without using him in the NHL for the next four years. On September 30, 2001 Thornton was finally transferred to the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for Marty Wilford , for which he completed first assignments in the highest North American professional league in the 2002/03 season . However, since the Canadian mostly had to play in the AHL in Chicago, he was hired as a free agent by the Anaheim Ducks in July 2006 , where he was able to play for the first time in a regular NHL squad.
With the Ducks Thornton won the Stanley Cup in 2007 and thus the North American Ice Hockey Championship, but he was given to the Boston Bruins for the 2007/08 season . With these he won his second Stanley Cup in the 2010/11 season .
After seven years in Boston, the attacker did not get a new contract with the Bruins after the 2013/14 season, so he joined the Florida Panthers as a free agent in July 2014 . There he was active for three more seasons before he declared his playing career over after the 2016/17 season. Additionally, he was slated to join the Panthers 'management team in the near future, which happened on June 1, 2017 when he was introduced as the Panthers' new Vice President of Business Operations .
