Scott Harrington (born March 10, 1993 in Kingston , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has played the defender position with the Columbus Blue Jackets in the National Hockey League since June 2016 .

Career

Harrington played in the junior area until the summer of 2009 for teams near his hometown Kingston in the province of Ontario . So he won the championship of the Ontario Junior Hockey League at the end of the 2008/09 season with the Kingston Voyageurs . After his selection in the OHL Priority Selection , the defender moved to the Ontario Hockey League for the London Knights for the 2009/10 season . There Harrington was elected to the league's all-rookie team after his first season. The following three years were also extremely successful, winning the J. Ross Robertson Cup twice and being elected to the First All-Star Team. He was also selected in the second round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft in 54th place by the Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League .

After finishing his junior career, Harrington switched to the Penguins franchise in the summer of 2013 , who had already signed him in July 2011. With the exception of ten appearances for Pittsburgh in the 2014/15 season , the defender was only used for their farm team , the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins , in the American Hockey League between 2013 and 2015 . In the summer of 2015, the Penguins then parted with their former draft election. Together with Kasperi Kapanen , Nick Spaling and a first and third round suffrage in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft , Harrington was given up in exchange for Phil Kessel , Tyler Biggs , Tim Erixon and a second round suffrage in the same draft to league rivals Toronto Maple Leafs . However, the 2015/16 game year was overshadowed by numerous injuries, so that the Canadian only played 32 games this season - 15 of them for Toronto in the NHL and 17 more for their farm team Toronto Marlies in the AHL. Since the Leafs subsequently found no use for Harrington, they transferred him to the Columbus Blue Jackets at the end of June 2016 together with a conditional five-round vote in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft . Toronto received Kerby Rychel in return .

In Columbus, the defender signed a new two-year deal in March 2017.

International

For his home country, Harrington played in the junior division at the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2010 , the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament 2010 , the U18 World Junior Championship in 2011 and the U20 World Junior Championship in 2012 and 2013 . He won the silver medal at the World U-17 Hockey Challenge with the selection Canada Ontario and was also elected to the all-star team of the tournament. He also won the gold medal at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament and the bronze medal at the U20 Junior World Championship in 2012.
