Markus Nutivaara (born June 6, 1994 in Oulu ) is a Finnish ice hockey player who has been playing the defender of the Columbus Blue Jackets in the National Hockey League since October 2016 .

Career

Nutivaara initially played until 2012 for the U16 and U18 teams of Kärpät Oulu and the U18 team of Ahmat Haukipudas . For his first year in the A-Junior division, he moved to the Pelicans Lahti in the summer of 2012 . For the 2013/14 season he finally returned to Kärpät Oulu, where he also played for the U20 team. At the same time, he also gained his first experience in the professional field, as he was used in eleven matches due to a loan deal with Jokipojat Joensuu in the second-class Mestis .

For the 2014/15 season , the defender finally made it to the Oulu squad. With the team he won the Finnish championship at the end of the season . His achievements finally piqued the interest of the Columbus Blue Jackets from the National Hockey League , who selected Nutivaara in the seventh and final round in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft in 189th place. However, the Finn stayed in Oulu for another year and confirmed his development from previous years under observation of the Blue Jackets scouts .

In May 2016, they finally signed their late draft election for two years and brought him to North America that summer . There he received a place in the NHL roster of the Columbus Blue Jackets after the pre-season and made his debut in October.

International

Nutivaara only played three test matches for the Finnish U20 national team in the junior division . He made his debut for the men's team as part of the Euro Hockey Tour in the 2015/16 season at the age of 21. His first major international tournament was the 2018 World Cup in Denmark .
