Edwin Vernon "Ed" Westfall (born September 19, 1940 in Belleville , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who, in the course of his active career between 1957 and 1979, among other things, 1321 games for the Boston Bruins and New York Islanders in the National Hockey League has contested on the position of the right winger . Westfall, who took part in the NHL All-Star Game four times, celebrated his greatest career success in the service of the Boston Bruins by winning the Stanley Cup in 1970 and 1972 . In addition, he received the Charlie Conacher Humanitarian Award and the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy for his social commitment .
Career
Westfall played for the Barrie Flyers and Niagara Falls Flyers in the Ontario Hockey Association during his junior years .
The Boston Bruins didn't often use him on their farm team , the Kingston Frontenacs in the Eastern Professional Hockey League . He quickly made the leap into the NHL as a defensive attacker. In the 1961/62 season he made his breakthrough straight away. He concentrated on his strengths on the defensive and could only score two goals in his 63 appearances. It was not until the 1964/65 season that he was able to attract attention with twelve hits on the offensive. The team was on the upswing, mainly due to Bobby Orr and Phil Esposito . In the 1969/70 season, the Bruins won the Stanley Cup and after a year in which the Bruins failed as the best team in the preliminary round in the playoffs, they won the second cup in 1971/72 . The team was very offensively oriented during this time, from which Westfall also benefited. He also scored 25 goals this season. He was used regularly with Derek Sanderson, especially when playing undernumbered .
In the 1972 NHL Expansion Draft , the Bruins didn't protect the now almost 32-year-old, and the New York Islanders didn't let the opportunity slip by. Westfall was also the first goalscorer in the history of the Islanders. In the first few years with a new team, there was no success, but with growing stars like Denis Potvin and Clark Gillies Westfall was able to take on a role as a leader. Even before the great successes of the Islanders, he ended his career after the 1978/79 season .
His pleasant demeanor predestined him for his future role as a television presenter, especially at the Islanders' games. Until 1998 he was active in this role for SportsChannel .
