The Pensacola Ice Flyers are an American ice hockey team based in Pensacola , Florida . The team has played in the Southern Professional Hockey League since 2009 .
history
The team was founded in 2009 as a franchise of the Southern Professional Hockey League . In Pensacola they filled the void left in the city by the Pensacola Ice Pilots , who played in the ECHL from 1996 to 2008 . The name was chosen as an allusion to the nearby Pensacola Naval Air Station Pensacola , as well as due to the fact that team owner Tim Kerr had played for the Philadelphia Flyers in the National Hockey League for eleven years .
In their premiere season, the Pensacola Ice Flyers finished fifth after the regular season in the 2009/10 season and immediately made it to the playoffs for the President's Cup . In the playoffs they were defeated in the first round by the eventual champions Huntsville Havoc with 1: 2 wins in the best-of-three series. The decision in favor of Huntsville was only made in extra time in game three.
Trainer
In the premiere season, the Canadian Todd Gordon was both head coach and general manager of the team. Before that, he had been the head coach of the Pensacola Ice Pilots in the ECHL from 2001 to 2004.
