The Fayetteville FireAntz are an American ice hockey team from Fayetteville , North Carolina . The team has played in the Southern Professional Hockey League since 2004 .

history

The team was founded in 2002 under the name Cape Fear Fire Antz as a franchise of the Atlantic Coast Hockey League . They replaced the Fayetteville Force in Fayetteville , which competed in the Central Hockey League from 1997 to 2001 . In the ACHL they finished fifth after the regular season in their debut season, which means they missed the playoffs. When the league was dissolved after only a year, the team joined the South East Hockey League . This league was only active for one year, so that the FireAntz joined the follow-up competition Southern Professional Hockey League in 2004 . The team, originally named after the nearby Cape Fear River , was renamed Fayetteville FireAntz on the occasion of their renewed league change.

In the SPHL, in which they have been playing since then, the Fayetteville FireAntz achieved their greatest success in the 2006/07 season when they won their championship, the President's Cup. In the final they had prevailed against the Jacksonville Barracudas in the best-of-five series with 3-1 victories. Most recently Fayetteville was in the playoff finals in the 2008/09 season, but lost to the Knoxville Ice Bears .
