The Winston-Salem Polar Twins were an American ice hockey team from Winston-Salem , North Carolina . The team played in the Southern Professional Hockey League in the 2004/05 season .

history

The team was founded in 2004 as a franchise of the Southern Professional Hockey League , which was held for the first time . Previously, a team from Winston-Salem had played in the 2003/04 season with the Winston-Salem T-birds in the South East Hockey League , one of the two predecessor leagues of the SPHL. The Winston-Salem Polar Twins were named after a team of the same name from the Southern Hockey League . In their only season, the team won only 14 of their 56 games, finishing in eighth and last place. The team clearly missed the SPHL playoffs. The franchise was then dissolved again after only one season. The void the Polar Twins left in the city was filled in 2007 by the Twin City Cyclones .
