The Tupelo T-Rex were an American ice hockey team based in Tupelo , Mississippi . The team played in the Western Professional Hockey League from 1998 to 2001 .
history
The Tupelo T-Rex was founded in 1998 as a franchise of the Western Professional Hockey League . Their first season, the 1998/99 season, they finished in sixth and thus last place in the WPHL East Division. In the following season they improved to fifth place in their division and reached the playoffs for the President's Cup for the first time , in which they, however, already in the first round with 1: 2 wins in the best-of-three series at the Lake Charles Ice Pirates failed. The 2000/01 season was the best season in franchise history. After they won the Governors's Cup as the league's best team of the regular season, they defeated the Corpus Christi IceRays 4-1 in the first playoff round , before the T-Rex in the second round 4-1 at eventual champions Shreveport Mudbugs failed.
When the WPHL was dissolved following the 2000/01 season, the Tupelo T-Rex were, despite their sporting success, one of only four WPHL teams that did not move to the Central Hockey League , but instead was dissolved. Attempts in later years to join the CHL or, alternatively, the South East Hockey League failed due to financial bottlenecks and contractual discrepancies about the use of the arena.
