With the Boston Bruins he won the Stanley Cup in 1970 and 1972 . His two brothers Jack and Jim were also active in the NHL.
Career
Fred Stanfield began his career in 1961 at the St. Catharines Teepees , which a year later in St. Catharines Blackhawks renamed after the team after financial problems from the National Hockey League - Franchise Chicago Blackhawks was bought. Overall, Stanfield completed three seasons for the Teepees / Black Hawks in the Ontario Hockey Association before making his debut for the Chicago Black Hawks in the National Hockey League at the beginning of the 1964/65 NHL season .
On May 15, 1967 Stanfield was transferred from the Black Hawks along with Phil Esposito and Ken Hodge to the Boston Bruins, Chicago received the players Gilles Marotte , Pit Martin and Jack Norris in return . This business turned out to be very profitable for the Bruins, Esposito and Bobby Orr formed a very strong offensive duo. The Boston Bruins became one of the strongest teams in the NHL, and in the 1969/70 and 1971/72 seasons Fred Stanfield won the Stanley Cup with his new team . In the 1970/71 season he was also the tenth-best scorer in the entire league with 76 points in 75 completed games, and because of the Bruins' high rate of goals in this season, he was “only” seventh in this ranking.
In total, the striker completed six seasons with the Bruins before he was given to the Minnesota North Stars on May 22, 1973 in exchange for Gilles Gilbert . On January 27, 1975, the Canadian was transferred again; the Buffalo Sabers secured the rights to the player in exchange for Norm Gratton and a third-round vote for the 1976 NHL Amateur Draft . Shortly thereafter, he lost to the Philadelphia Flyers with the Sabers in the Stanley Cup final .
After three more seasons in Buffalo, Fred Stanfield decided to join the Hershey Bears in the American Hockey League . After 50 games in the AHL, he ended his playing career and took over the coaching of Chuck Hamilton for the remainder of the AHL season 1978/79 . The Hershey Bears were eliminated in the first play-off round against the Binghamton Dusters and Stanfield left the club following that season. 1979/80 he was briefly active as head coach of the Niagara Falls Flyers from the Ontario Hockey Association.
