The playoffs for the Stanley Cup in 1928 began on March 27, 1928 and ended on April 14, 1928 with the New York Rangers' 3-2 win over the Montreal Maroons . The Rangers won their first title in the second year after their founding and became the second US team to win the Stanley Cup after the Seattle Metropolitans (1917). In addition, they had the best goal scorer and top scorer of the playoffs in their ranks in the person of Frank Boucher , while they had to contest the final exclusively on opposing ice, as a circus had booked the local Madison Square Garden . The Maroons, on the other hand, were in the second final of their franchise history after winning their first Stanley Cup in 1926.

The three best teams from each division qualified for the playoffs. In the quarter-finals, the respective second and third faced each other within each division, before the winner from this pairing competed in the semi-finals against the division winner for a place in the final. In the final, the two best teams from both divisions met each other and determined the Stanley Cup winner in a best-of-five series. In the quarter and semi-final series, only two games were played, whereby only the goal difference to advance was taken into account, so that draws were also possible.

In series with only two games, each team hosted a home game. In the final, the higher-ranked team was supposed to play three of a maximum of five games in front of a home crowd, but the Rangers' Madison Square Garden was occupied by a circus, so the entire final took place in Montreal.

Overtime followed for games that remained tied after 60 minutes of regular playing time . It ended with the first goal scored ( Sudden Death ) . This rule did not apply to the quarter and semi-finals, which could end in a draw and only went into overtime if the goal difference at the end of the second game did not produce a winner.
