Joseph Anthony Miller (born October 6, 1898 in Morrisburg , Ontario ; † August 1, 1963 ) was a Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper who played 130 games for the New York Americans , New York Rangers and Pittsburgh Pirates during his playing career between 1918 and 1932 and the Philadelphia Quakers in the National Hockey League . In 1928, Miller won the Stanley Cup in the service of the New York Rangers .
Career
Miller first appeared in 1918 for the Ottawa New Edinburghs in the local city league of the Canadian capital Ottawa and guarded the gate there until 1924. During this time he was considered the best goalkeeper in the league. In 1924 the goalie moved to the United States , where he initially worked for the Fort Pitt Panthers in the United States Amateur Hockey Association and, from 1925, for two years for the St. Paul Saints in the American Hockey Association .
The transfer rights in the National Hockey League to his person were at this time with the Pittsburgh Pirates . These had transferred the same to the New York Americans in January 1926 in exchange for Odie Cleghorn and to settle the loan from Jesse Spring . For the 1927/28 season, Miller finally moved to the professional field and stood between the posts for the Americans in the NHL. After 28 missions they awarded him during the season in February 1928 to the Niagara Falls Cataracts from the Canadian Professional Hockey League . There he was only active for two months, however, as the New York Americans saw a new source of income when the goalkeeper of the New York Rangers , Lorne Chabot , injured himself in the final games of the Stanley Cup . Miller replaced Chabot - on loan - from the third game of the final series against the Montreal Maroons and was instrumental in the Rangers' first cup win with only three goals conceded and one shutout .
Before the 1928-29 season , the New York Americans parted ways with Miller when they exchanged him for goalkeeper Roy Worters of the Pittsburgh Pirates along with $ 20,000 . There he was the goalkeeper for the next two years. Finally, he moved with the team to Philadelphia when it was relocated before the 1930/31 season and continued playing as the Philadelphia Quakers . For the Quakers, however, he only played twelve games, as he had to line up behind Wilf Cude as a substitute goalkeeper. Following the season, Miller completed another year of play for the Syracuse Stars in the International Hockey League before ending his career.
