Rodger Dennis Smith (born July 26, 1896 in Ottawa , Ontario ; † January 31, 1935 ) was a Canadian ice hockey player who played 214 games for the Pittsburgh Pirates and Philadelphia Quakers in the National Hockey League during his active career between 1919 and 1932 has denied on the position of defender .

Career

Smith first played very successfully in the city league of his native Ottawa until 1923 , before he followed the call of his friend Lionel Conacher and joined the Pittsburgh Yellow Jackets from the United States Amateur Hockey Association . The defender stayed there until the team was sold in 1925, before he was signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates from the National Hockey League and thus switched to the professional camp.

With the Pirates Smith was the following five seasons in the squad and moved with the team to Philadelphia when it relocated before the season 1930/31 and continued playing as the Philadelphia Quakers . It was not until December 1930 that he and Tex White were sold to the Pittsburgh Yellow Jackets, which were now part of the International Hockey League . The Quakers had to make room in the squad after the short-term engagements of D'Arcy Coulson and Eddie McCalmon .

The defensive player did not stay long in the Yellow Jackets squad, however, as he soon returned to his Canadian homeland and played for league rivals Niagara Falls Cataracts . He let his career end in the 1931/32 season with the Chicoutimi Carabins.

family

Smith's younger brother Des Smith was also a professional ice hockey player and played a total of 221 games for four different franchises in the National Hockey League between 1937 and 1942 . His sons - Rodger Smith's nephews - Gary and Brian Smith also played in the NHL.
