The playoffs for the Stanley Cup of 1939 began on March 21, 1939 and ended on April 16, 1939 with the Boston Bruins' 4-1 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs . The Bruins won their second title after 1929 and played their first final since 1930 . In addition, they had the best scorer of the playoffs in their ranks in the person of Bill Cowley . For the Maple Leafs, however, who had Gordie Drillon as the top scorer this post-season , it was the fourth defeat in the final in the last five years. In addition, the best-of-seven mode, which is still used today, was introduced in 1939 , so that from now on a team needed four instead of three wins to win the series.
mode
The six best teams in the league qualified for the playoffs. The first two teams in the final table played one of the two finalists directly in a first semi-final. The four remaining teams faced each other in two quarter-finals, with the third on the seeding list meeting fourth and the fifth against sixth. The quarter-finals finally culminated in the second semi-final, which determined the second finalist. The first semi-final and the Stanley Cup final were held in best-of-seven mode , while in the quarter-final series and the second semi-final series, two victories were enough to advance and thus played in best-of-three mode.
In series with a best-of-seven mode, the higher seeded team had home rights in the first two games, the next two the opposing team. If no winner has emerged from the round by then, the home law changed from game to game. The higher-ranked team had a home advantage in games 1, 2, 5 and 7, i.e. four of the maximum seven games. In series with a best-of-three mode, home rights changed from game to game, so that the higher-ranked team played in front of their home crowd in the first and decisive third game. It should be noted, however, that there were regular deviations from the distribution of home rights presented for various reasons.
Overtime followed for games that remained tied after 60 minutes of regular playing time . It ended with the first goal scored ( Sudden Death ) .

This year, all Bruins players who played during the season and were still under contract with them were immortalized at the Stanley Cup. Pat McReavy , Terry Reardon and Jack Shewchuk did not automatically qualify for consideration by today's standards due to insufficiently completed games and are officially no longer counted as part of the winning team.
