The playoffs for the Stanley Cup of 1938 began on March 22, 1938 and ended on April 12, 1938 with the 3-1 victory of the Chicago Black Hawks against the Toronto Maple Leafs . The Black Hawks won their second title after 1934 and at the same time their last until 1961 . In addition, they provided one of the two top scorers of these playoffs in the person of their captain Johnny Gottselig , while Gordie Drillon of the Maple Leafs achieved the same number of scorer points and was also the top scorer. The Maple Leafs also contested their third final in the last four years and suffered their third defeat.
mode
The three best teams from each division qualified for the playoffs. The two division winners played one of the two finalists directly in a first semi-final. The four remaining teams faced each other in two quarter-finals, with the two division runners-up and the two division thirds clashing. The quarter-finals finally culminated in the second semi-final, which determined the second finalist. The first semi-final and the Stanley Cup final were held in best-of-five mode , while in the quarter-final series and the second semi-final series, two victories were enough to advance and thus played in best-of-three mode.
In series with best-of-five mode, the lower-seeded team had home rights in the first two games before the higher-seeded team played three home games in a row. In series with a best-of-three mode, home rights changed from game to game, so that the higher-ranked team played in front of their home crowd in the first and decisive third game. It should be noted, however, that there were regular deviations from the distribution of home rights presented for various reasons.
Overtime followed for games that remained tied after 60 minutes of regular playing time . It ended with the first goal scored ( Sudden Death ) .
