Robertson celebrated his greatest career success in the service of the Detroit Red Wings in 1937 by winning the Stanley Cup . He was also a member of the NHL Second All-Star Team in 1939 .

Career

It took Robertson a long time to break into the professional world. After stints in the junior division with the Regina Falcons and Vancouver Monarchs , he ventured into the Pacific Coast Hockey League in 1928 - where the goalkeeper worked for the Victoria Cubs and Tacoma Tigers for the next three years . Then the Canadian moved to the California Hockey League to the Hollywood Stars . In the following playing years until 1937, the Edmonton Eskimos , for whom Robertson stood between the posts in the Western Canada Hockey League and North West Hockey League , as well as Windsor Bulldogs , Rochester Cardinals and Pittsburgh Hornets from the International Hockey League were further stations of the goalkeeper.

After Robertson had already been sold by the Windsor Bulldogs for 1,500 US dollars to the Detroit Red Wings of the National Hockey League in the summer of 1936 and they had used him during the season at the Pittsburgh Hornets, he came in the course of the Stanley Cup playoffs Made his NHL debut in 1937 at the age of 26 after goalkeeper Normie Smith was injured. Robertson played six games during the playoffs, five of them in the final series against the New York Rangers , and with two shutouts was instrumental in the Red Wings' second Stanley Cup win in their franchise history. Despite the success, the Detroit Red Wings parted ways in May 1937 - less than a month after winning the title - from their goalkeeper and gave him in exchange for John Doran and 7,500 US dollars to the New York Americans .

In the New York Americans, the goalkeeper finally made his breakthrough in the NHL and he was the club's regular goalkeeper for the next four years until 1941. In the service of the Amerks , Robertson succeeded in being elected to the NHL Second All-Star Team at the end of the 1938/39 season ; in the 1940/41 season , however, he won only six of 36 games. After the team had renamed itself to Brooklyn Americans before the 1941/42 season and he had already played a few games for the Springfield Indians in the American Hockey League in the preseason , Robertson lost his regular place to Chuck Rayner and only played twelve games during the season. He was mainly used in the AHL for Springfield. After the season he did not return to the NHL.

As a result, Robertson returned to his Canadian homeland and played between 1943 and 1944 with the Edmonton Vics for the Allan Cup . He died in January 1979, two months after his 69th birthday.
