The playoffs for the Stanley Cup of 1937 began on March 23, 1937 and ended on April 15, 1937 with the Detroit Red Wings 3-2 victory over the New York Rangers . The Red Wings won their second title and the second in a row after beating the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-1 last year . They became the first US franchise to defend the Stanley Cup, while Marty Barry was the top scorer in these playoffs. The defeated Rangers played their first final after 1933 , when they had also prevailed 3-1 against the Maple Leafs.
With the playoffs in 1937, the goal difference as a criterion for advancement in the quarter-finals was replaced by the best-of-three mode, so that at the same time no game in the playoffs could end in a draw.
mode
The three best teams from each division qualified for the playoffs. The two division winners played one of the two finalists directly in a first semi-final. The four remaining teams faced each other in two quarter-finals, with the two division runners-up and the two division thirds clashing. The quarter-finals finally culminated in the second semi-final, which determined the second finalist. The first semi-final and the Stanley Cup final were held in best-of-five mode , while in the quarter-final series and the second semi-final series, two victories were enough to advance and thus played in best-of-three mode.
In series with best-of-five mode, the lower-seeded team had home rights in the first two games before the higher-seeded team played three home games in a row. In series with a best-of-three mode, home rights changed from game to game, so that the higher-ranked team played in front of their home crowd in the first and decisive third game. It should be noted, however, that there were regular deviations from the distribution of home rights presented for various reasons.
Overtime followed for games that remained tied after 60 minutes of regular playing time . It ended with the first goal scored ( Sudden Death ) .
