John Poulett, 1st Baron Poulett

John Poulett, 1st Baron Poulett (* 1586 ; † March 20, 1649 ) was an English nobleman, military man and politician.

His parents were Sir Anthony Poulett († July 22, 1600), Governor of Jersey , and Catherine Norris, daughter of Henry Norreys, 1st Baron Norreys .

He went through a military career and was colonel in the cavalry in 1608 . In 1610 he was a student at the Middle Temple . From 1610 to 1614 he was a Member of the House of Commons for Somerset , and again from 1621 to 1622 for Lyme Regis . In 1616 he was sheriff of Somerset. From 1626 to 1636 he was Warden of Roche Forest . His residence was Hinton House in Hinton Saint George, Somerset. With letters patent of June 23, 1627, King Charles I bestowed him the hereditary title of nobility of Baron Poulett , of Hinton St George in the County of Somerset, whereby he was also a member of the House of Lords . In 1635 he was knighted together with his son John and was captain of the 42-gun warship Constant Reformation . In September 1640 Charles I called him to the Great Council in York . In the English Civil War he sided with the king and served as a colonel in both infantry and cavalry regiments in 1643. In 1646 he was Commissioner of Exeter and was captured when the city surrendered.

He married Elizabeth Kenn, daughter of Christopher Kenn, of Kenn Court in Somerset, around 1614. The couple had four children:

  • Hon. Elizabeth Poulett (1628–1690), ⚭ William Ashburnham († 1665)
  • The Hon. Margaret Poulett, ⚭ Sir Richard Cholmeley, of Grosmont in Yorkshire

When he died in 1649, his son John inherited him as 2nd Baron Poulett. His widow married in 1649 as his second wife the royalist House of Commons John Ashburnham , of Ashburnham in Sussex. His daughter Elizabeth married his son from his first marriage, William.
