The playoffs for the Stanley Cup in 1960 began on March 23, 1960 and ended on April 14, 1960 with the 4-0 win of the Canadiens de Montréal against the Toronto Maple Leafs . The Canadiens thus won their fifth title in a row and the twelfth in the history of the franchise . The five consecutive Stanley Cup victories are also a still (as of Playoffs 2020) valid record as the ten final appearances in a row ( 1951 -1960). In addition, Montréal succeeded in 1960 as the last team to date to deny the playoffs without a single defeat; before this (with eight wins required) only the Detroit Red Wings had succeeded in 1952 . In addition, Bernie Geoffrion and Henri Richard of the Canadiens led the post-season scorer list . For the Maple Leafs, however, it was the second final defeat in a row after the team had lost 4-1 to Montréal the year before.

mode

The four best teams in the league qualified for the playoffs. In the semi-finals, the first and third as well as the second and fourth of the final table faced each other. The respective winners then contested the Stanley Cup final.

All series were held in best-of-seven mode , which means that a team needed four wins to advance. The higher seeded team had home rights in the first two games, the next two the opposing team. If no winner has emerged from the round by then, the home law changed from game to game. The higher-ranked team had a home advantage in games 1, 2, 5 and 7, i.e. four of the maximum seven games.

Overtime followed for games that remained tied after 60 minutes of regular playing time . It ended with the first goal scored ( Sudden Death ) .
