The playoffs for the Stanley Cup the year 1973 began on April 4, 1973 and ended on 10 May 1973 with the 4: 2 victory of the Montreal Canadiens over the Chicago Blackhawks . Thus, the Canadiens won their 18th overall title of the franchise credit history and presented with Yvan Cournoyer both the top scorer and the with the Conn Smythe Trophy winning Most Valuable Player of this post-season . The Black Hawks, on the other hand, suffered their fourth consecutive defeat in the final, most recently they also lost to Montréal in 1971 (3: 4). Furthermore, these playoffs marked the first time since 1965 and thus the first time since the big league expansion of 1967 that no series was decided with a sweep . As a result, this would not happen again until 1991 .

mode

The four best teams from the Eastern and Western divisions qualified for the playoffs . In the quarter-finals, the first and fourth as well as the second and third on the seeding list faced each other within each division. The semi-finals were played between the divisions, so the higher-ranked team from the east met the lower-ranked team from the west and analogously the higher-ranked team from the west met the lower-ranked team from the east. This was followed by the Stanley Cup final.

All series were held in best-of-seven mode , which means that a team needed four wins to advance. The higher seeded team had home rights in the first two games, the next two the opposing team. If no winner has emerged from the round by then, the home law changed from game to game. The higher-ranked team had a home advantage in games 1, 2, 5 and 7, i.e. four of the maximum seven games.

Overtime followed for games that remained tied after 60 minutes of regular playing time . It ended with the first goal scored ( Sudden Death ) .
