Joseph Jude Drouin (born October 28, 1948 in Mont-Louis , Québec ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who played 738 games for the Canadiens de Montréal , Minnesota North Stars , New York Islanders and in the course of his active career between 1966 and 1980 Winnipeg Jets has contested in the National Hockey League on the position of the center .

Career

Drouin first spent his junior career between 1965 and 1966 with the Maple Leafs de Verdun in the Ligue de hockey junior du Montréal Métropolitain . From there he was selected in the NHL Amateur Draft 1966 in the third round in 17th place by the Canadiens de Montréal from the National Hockey League . The striker then switched to the Canadien junior de Montréal in the Ontario Hockey Association for a year .

In the summer of 1967, the French-Canadian finally switched to the professional field at the age of 19. The Canadiens used the striker for the following two seasons mainly with the Houston Apollos in the Central Professional Hockey League , while he made his debut in the NHL for Montréal during the 1968/69 season . Due to the strong squad of the Habs , they did not find a place for their young talent, but put him in the 1969/70 season with their farm team , the Voyageurs de Montréal , in the American Hockey League . There Drouin convinced with 106 points scorer in 65 season games. This brought him the John B. Sollenberger Trophy as the best point player in the entire league. He also received the Dudley "Red" Garrett Memorial Award for best newcomer to the league and was appointed to the AHL First All-Star Team .

Despite the convincing season in the minor league , the Canadiens de Montréal continued to see no permanent use for the offensive player and therefore transferred him in May 1970 in exchange for Bill Collins to the Minnesota North Stars . At the North Stars, Drouin made the leap into the NHL regular squad straight away. Although he scored 68 points in his first full year in the league, he made headlines due to an indiscipline when he assaulted referee Bruce Hood in a game against the Pittsburgh Penguins . As a result of the incident, he was banned from NHL President Clarence Campbell for three games and sentenced to a fine of 150 US dollars. Nevertheless, the center forward remained an integral part of Minnesota's squad for another three and a half years and completed his best year in the league in the 1972/73 season with 73 points.

In January 1975 there was another transfer, in which Drouin was involved. He moved in exchange for Craig Cameron to the New York Islanders , for which he was active for another four seasons in the NHL. After his role in the team had drastically lost weight in the course of the 1977/78 season , the Canadian, who was shortly before his 30th birthday, decided to retire from active sport. Instead, he put the focus on his restaurant chain on Long Iceland , focusing on seafood had specialized. Drouin's break from ice hockey lasted only one season, however, as he surprisingly signed a contract with the Winnipeg Jets in October 1979 as a free agent . With the Jets, he initially completed a full season before he declared his career over a second and last time in November 1980 after seven missions in the 1980/81 season .
