Gary Bruce Sabourin (born December 4, 1943 in Parry Sound , Ontario ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player who played 689 games for the St. Louis Blues , Toronto Maple Leafs , California Golden Seals and in the course of his active career between 1962 and 1977 Cleveland Barons has played in the National Hockey League (NHL) on the position of right winger . In the service of the St. Louis Blues Sabourin took part in the NHL All-Star Game twice in 1970 and 1971 .
Career
Sabourin spent his junior years between 1962 and 1964 in the Ontario Hockey Association (OHA), where he first played a year for the Guelph Royals . With the franchise , the striker moved to Kitchener in the summer of 1963 , where it continued to play as Kitchener Rangers . In both seasons he collected about one scorer point per mission, so that by the end of his junior career he had scored 90 points in 95 missions.
In the spring of 1964, the 21-year-old switched to the professional camp, where he was part of the organization of the New York Rangers from the National Hockey League (NHL). The Rangers used Sabourin in the following three years but exclusively in the Central Professional Hockey League (CPHL) with their farm teams . There he first ran two seasons for the St. Paul and Minnesota Rangers , then one season for the Omaha Knights . With the St. Paul Rangers he won the Adams Cup in 1965 , while two years later with the Knights he was one of the players of the team that had lost in the final. With the expansion of the National Hockey League and the associated inclusion of six new teams in the league, the Canadian found his way into the NHL for the 1967/68 season . Through a transfer deal, Sabourin was transferred to the St. Louis Blues in June 1967 with Bob Plager , Gordon Kannegiesser and Tim Ecclestone , who in return gave Rod Seiling back to New York after they had selected him in the 1967 NHL Expansion Draft .
In the service of the St. Louis Blues, the wing attacker first had to work his way into the NHL via the Kansas City Blues farm team in the CPHL, before he started regularly for St. Louis after his first NHL assignment in mid-November 1967 from the beginning of December of the same year ran up. For the next seven years he was a regular player there and always collected at least 30 scorer points from his second year. In 1970 and 1971 he took part in the NHL All-Star Game as a representative of the franchise . After the 1973/74 season , Sabourin was transferred to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for Eddie Johnston .
At the Maple Leafs, however, the offensive player found no sporting home and was sent to another team after only one year with only 55 missions. In June 1975 it was given to the California Golden Seals in exchange for Stan Weir . There Sabourin completed his best NHL season in the 1975/76 season with 49 scorer points. In August 1976, he moved the franchise from California to Cleveland , Ohio , where he played his last 33 NHL games in the jersey of the Cleveland Barons . As he missed numerous games this season due to injuries, he announced the end of his playing career in the summer of 1977 at the age of 34.
