The playoffs for the Stanley Cup in 1981 began on April 8, 1981 and ended on May 21, 1981 with the New York Islanders' 4-1 victory over the Minnesota North Stars . The Islanders won their second Stanley Cup in their second final and also defended their title from the previous year. With 97 goals and an average of 5.39 hits per game, they also achieved new playoff highs, which to date (as of playoffs 2019) have only been exceeded in 1985 . They also put in Mike Bossy the scorer and Butch Goring to the Conn Smythe Trophy winning Most Valuable Player of the post-season . The defeated Minnesota North Stars, however, contested their first Stanley Cup final in franchise history .
mode
The 16 teams qualified for the playoffs were seeded according to their performance in the regular season (most points; most wins in the event of a tie). In the first round the highest seeded team (1) met the lowest seeded (16), accordingly the second against the team seeded in 15th position, etc. This system was also used to determine the matches in the second and third round.
The series of the first round are played in the best-of-five mode, the series of all subsequent rounds in the best-of-seven mode, which means that a team needs four wins to progress from the second round; in the first round three. The higher seeded team has home rights in the first two games, the next two the opposing team. If no winner has emerged from the round by then, home rights will change from game to game. The higher-ranked team has a home advantage in games 1, 2, 5 and 7, i.e. four of the maximum seven games.
In the case of games that remain a draw after the regular playing time of 60 minutes, overtime follows . It ends with the first goal scored ( Sudden Death ) .
