John Van Boxmeer (born November 20, 1952 in Petrolia , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and has been a coach since 1984.

Career as a player

John van Boxmeer began his career in 1972 with the Nova Scotia Voyageurs in the North American American Hockey League . In the 1972 NHL Amateur Draft , the Montréal Canadiens selected him in the first round in 14th position. From 1973 he came to work with the Canadiens in the National Hockey League and won the Stanley Cup in the 1975/76 season . However, he was not immortalized on the trophy, despite having played more than half of the regular season games.

He then moved to the Colorado Rockies and in 1979 to the Buffalo Sabers . From 1983 Van Boxmeer played some games with the Québec Nordiques in the NHL, then with the Fredericton Express and the Rochester Americans in the AHL.

In total, Van Boxmeer played 588 games in the NHL and 213 in the AHL.

Career as a coach

From the 1984/85 season Van Boxmeer coached the Rochester Americans and won the AHL championship, the Calder Cup , in the 1986/87 season . From 1990 to 1992 he coached the Buffalo Sabers as an assistant coach, but returned to the Rochester Americans in 1993 as a coach. From 1995 he was a coach with the Los Angeles Ice Dogs , and then with their successor team, the Long Beach Ice Dogs , under contract in the International Hockey League . In the seasons 2003/2004 and 2005/2006 was Van Boxmeer assistant coach with the Los Angeles Kings .

From the 2006/07 season he was head coach of SC Bern and led the team to the play-off finals this season .

In the 2007/08 season , John Van Boxmeer and his team finished the qualification in first place with 111 points (22 points ahead of HC Servette Genève ) and a goal difference of +75. In the playoffs, however, they no longer knew how to convince and were eliminated in the quarter-finals against Friborg-Gottéron .

On August 1, 2008, John Van Boxmeer suffered a heart attack. He returned to the gang almost a month later as coach of SC Bern and coached the team at the start of the 2008/09 season . After winning the qualification, SC Bern was eliminated in the playoff quarter-finals against EV Zug . As a result, John Van Boxmeer was removed from office. From the 2009/10 season Van Boxmeer worked as a coach at Lausanne HC . The team was B champions in 2010, but missed promotion to the National League A against EHC Biel . In October 2012 he was dismissed with immediate effect after an unsatisfactory interim result - Lausanne HC only finished sixth after 14 games this season.
