Gregory James Smith (born July 18, 1955 in Ponoka , Alberta ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player who played 892 games for the California Golden Seals , Cleveland Barons , Minnesota North Stars , Detroit Red Wings during his playing career between 1973 and 1988 and Washington Capitals in the National Hockey League on the position of the defender has denied.

Career

Smith spent his junior years in the Alberta Junior Hockey League with the Calgary Canucks until 1973 , before the Canadian ventured from there the rather unusual route to a US university. The defense attorney studied at Colorado College from the summer of 1973 . In parallel, he played in the following three years for the university team in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association , a division in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . During this time, Smith was both in the 1975 NHL Amateur Draft in the fourth round in 57th place by the California Golden Seals from the National Hockey League and in the WHA Amateur Draft in 1975 in the seventh round in 94th position by the Calgary Cowboys from the World Hockey Association selected.

After completing his studies, Smith was appointed to the end of the 1975/76 season by the California Golden Seals in their NHL squad and made his professional debut there. He also played other games for the cooperation partner Salt Lake Golden Eagles in the Central Hockey League . With the beginning of the 1976/77 season , the defender stood for the following two seasons in the roster of the Cleveland Barons , after the franchise from Oakland , California to Richfield , Ohio to Cleveland had been relocated. When the Cleveland franchise went over to the Minnesota North Stars after two years of gaming in the summer of 1978 , Smith was one of the players who were taken over by Minnesota in the 1978 NHL Dispersal Draft .

He played another three years for the team in the NHL, before he was transferred to the Detroit Red Wings in August 1981 together with the transfer rights to Don Murdoch and a first-round option in the NHL Entry Draft in 1982 . In return, Minnesota received a first-round vote in the same draft from the Red Wings. Smith ran a total of almost five years for the Red Wings before another transfer business led him to the Washington Capitals at the end of the 1985/86 season . While John Barrett moved to the capital with him , Detroit received Darren Veitch . After two years of playing in Washington, Smith ended his active career in the summer of 1988 at the age of 33 and 892 NHL appearances.

International

For his homeland Smith took in the years 1977 in the Austrian capital Vienna and in 1979 in Moscow respectively at the World Cup in part. In both competitions, the striker missed winning a medal with the maple leaves with fourth place in the final ranking . Smith played a total of 15 World Cup games for the Canadian national team and recorded two scorer points, including one goal.
