John David Barrett (born July 1, 1958 in Ottawa , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who played 504 national hockey games for the Detroit Red Wings , Washington Capitals and Minnesota North Stars in the course of his playing career between 1976 and 1987 League on the position of defender . Barrett celebrated the greatest success of his career during his rookie season in the service of the Kalamazoo Wings from the International Hockey League by winning the Turner Cup . His eight year older brother Fred was also a professional ice hockey player and 13 years active in the NHL.

Career

Barrett, who was born in the Canadian capital Ottawa , spent part of his junior years with the Gloucester Rangers before moving to the higher-class Ontario Major Junior Hockey League . There he was active for the Windsor Spitfires between 1976 and 1978 . During his two years with the team, the defender played a total of 145 games and scored 55 points . After he was selected in the eighth round in the 1978 NHL Amateur Draft at 129th position by the Detroit Red Wings of the National Hockey League , the 20-year-old left the junior camp and switched to the professional field.

There the defender was used by the Detroit Red Wings for the following year and a half in the International Hockey League . The defender first ran in 42 games for the Milwaukee Admirals before moving to the Kalamazoo Wings within the league . With the team he won the Turner Cup , the championship trophy of the IHL, at the end of his rookie year . Barrett also spent the beginning of the 1979/80 season with the Kalamazoo Wings before he was ordered to the Adirondack Red Wings in the American Hockey League . The defensive player stayed there until the end of January 1980, when the Detroit Red Wings were called to the NHL squad. In the following weeks, the Canadian established himself in Detroit's squad and completed 56 games by the end of the game year. He reached 13 points scorer. He confirmed this value in the following three years. In the 1984/85 season he set a personal record with 25 points before leaving the franchise towards the end of the following season .

Together with Greg Smith , Barrett was transferred to the US capital to the Washington Capitals in March 1986 , while the Red Wings received Darren Veitch in return . He finished the season with the Capitals and played 55 more games for the team by January 1987. He missed the rest of the season and much of the following due to a fracture of the kneecap , which had ruptured again in the meantime. It was not until February 1988 that he returned for Washington's cooperation partner, the Binghamton Whalers , in the AHL, and was then transferred to the Minnesota North Stars after five missions . He had not been able to convince the Capitals of his further NHL suitability. The same happened to him after the transfer to Minnesota, where his brother Fred Barrett had played for over ten years. He only played one game for Minnesota and two more for the farm team, the Kalamazoo Wings in the IHL, before he had to end his active career prematurely at the age of 29 due to the two fractured kneecaps.
