Frederick William "Fred" Barrett (born January 26, 1950 in Ottawa , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who played 789 games for the Minnesota North Stars and Los Angeles Kings in National Hockey in the course of his active career between 1967 and 1984 League on the position of defender . Barrett celebrated his greatest success in the service of the Minnesota North Stars, for which he played all but 15 games, with reaching the final series of the Stanley Cup playoffs in 1981 . His brother John , eight years his junior, was also a professional ice hockey player and eight years in the NHL.
Career
Barrett spent his youth in his native Ottawa , where he played until 1966 for the junior teams of the Ottawa Junior Canadians and Ottawa Capitals . Even when he was a junior he was marked by serious injuries. He missed the entire 1965/66 season of the Junior Canadians due to a fracture of the kneecap, and after moving to the Toronto Marlboros in the higher-ranking Ontario Hockey Association in the summer of 1966, a bone splinter in his ankle that was diagnosed during the pre-season resulted in him being in his actual rookie year could only play two games for the Marlboros. In the playoffs he was available again and won the J. Ross Robertson Cup , the OHA championship trophy , with the team . A little later, the team made the double perfect by winning the prestigious Memorial Cup . In his sophomore year Barrett was also not free from injuries, playing 51 games with a broken hand. It finally followed two more seasons until the spring of 1970 in Toronto, before he was selected in the NHL Amateur Draft 1970 in the second round in 20th place by the Minnesota North Stars from the National Hockey League .
The 20-year-old then switched to the professional field for the 1970/71 season and immediately made the leap into the North Stars squad. In his first season he played 57 games and prepared 13 goals. However, there were repeated injuries that set him back. He repeatedly missed significant time due to broken bones - including the thigh bone - and a shoulder injury plagued him. After the defensive player had spent the 1971/72 season with the Cleveland Barons in the American Hockey League , he returned to the NHL for the following year and was - if not plagued by injuries - for the following eleven seasons until the fall of 1983 a solid Part of the North Stars roster. It was not until six years after his league debut that he was able to complete his first full NHL season. Overall, he only played three times more than 70 games in his 13 years in the league. In the course of the Stanley Cup playoffs in 1981 , he surprisingly reached the finals of the Stanley Cup with the Minnesota North Stars.
In October 1983 Barrett's time in Minnesota ended after 13 years when he was transferred to the Los Angeles Kings along with Steve Christoff . In return, Dave Lewis moved to the North Stars. It was not until March 1984, however, before the defender made his debut for the Kings. After 15 missions, after the 1983/84 season, plagued by injuries at the age of 34 - he broke his hand again, suffered from a back injury and complained of calcium deposits in his legs - his active career.
