Antonio Maria Fanìa

Antonio Maria Fanìa OFMObs (born February 5, 1804 in Rignano Garganico , † January 23, 1880 in Rome ) was an Italian Roman Catholic theologian and bishop of Potenza and Marsico Nuovo .

Life

In 1823 he joined the Order of the Franciscan Observants. After studying in Bologna he became lecturer in philosophy and theology in his order and was ordained a priest on May 3, 1827 . Afterwards he was lecturer of philosophy at the convents in Ferrara and then in Lucera. Provincial from 1835 to 1838, he became general secretary in 1839 and then general procurator of his religious community in 1844 . He settled in Rome, where he became a member of the Academy for the Catholic Religion on April 6, 1845 .

Antonio Maria Fanìa entered the service of the Curia on April 28, 1846, as Consultor of the Index Congregation . Under the pontificate of Pius IX. he became consultor of the Holy Office and examiner of the bishops in theology. As a respected theologian, he helped to formulate the dogma of the Immaculate Conception of Mary . He was also involved in the publication of the Specchio della disciplina (Rome 1851), which was previously awarded to St. Bonaventure .

On March 27, 1867 Antonio Maria Fanìa was appointed Bishop of Marsico Nuovo et Potenza in Basilicata. He was ordained bishop on April 7th of the same year by the Cardinal Bishop of Palestrina , Luigi Amat di San Filippo e Sorso ; Co-consecrators were Archbishop Pietro de Villanova Castellacci and Bishop Giuseppe Maria Papardo del Parco .

After thirteen years as bishop, Antonio Maria Fanìa died in Rome in 1880.
