Ulf Gösta Nilsson (born May 11, 1950 in Nynäshamn ) is a former Swedish ice hockey player (center) who played for the New York Rangers in the National Hockey League and the Winnipeg Jets in the World Hockey Association from 1974 to 1983 .

Career

In Sweden he played for AIK Solna . With the Swedish national ice hockey team he played at the 1973 World Cup in a row with Ulf Sterner and won silver. At the 1974 World Cup , he tested positive for ephedrine after the first game, a 4-1 against Poland, and was immediately banned for the rest of the tournament. The game was then rated 0: 5, but Sweden won the bronze medal in the end despite losing two points. Nilsson and the Finn Stig Wetzell , who also tested positive for ephedrine at this World Cup, were the first doping cases to be discovered in the history of the Ice Hockey World Championship. Both were banned from international games for 18 months after the tournament.

From 1974 he played at the Winnipeg Jets together with his compatriot Anders Hedberg in a series with the legendary Bobby Hull . The three formed one of the strongest storm ranks of the WHA. In his four years there he helped the team twice to the championship, the AVCO World Trophy . Thanks to numerous assists, he was always among the best scorers at the WHA and was able to achieve well over 100 points in his four seasons. With 484 points, he is the most successful European in the WHA.

Together with Anders Hedberg, he moved to the 1978/79 season for the New York Rangers in the NHL. Here he was nominated for the Challenge Cup 1979 . During his time in the NHL he was plagued by injuries. He missed the 1981/82 season completely, and he only played twice for the Springfield Indians in the American Hockey League . The following year he played three games in the Central Hockey League for the Tulsa Oilers before going on the ice ten times for the Rangers.
