Reviews

When Grandma got weird

  • FAZ : "Today, Nilsson is already sixty and one of Sweden's most renowned children's book authors. Anyone who remembers his volume The Best Funerals of the World , which was also illustrated by Eva Eriksson and appeared in German two years ago, knows that the writer is one of the most sensitive subjects It goes without saying and knows how to tell a lot of jokes. But this time Eriksson's pictures take on a productive life of their own compared to the text - through the richness of detail in the motifs, which at first glance appear simple. "

When we were alone in the world

  • Die Zeit : "Nilsson tells terse, almost laconic, and always stays within the boy's horizon of experience. A lot of situation comedy develops from this, on the other hand the seriousness of the situation is not lost. Eva Eriksson supports both with her colored pencil drawings: She draws such sad pictures as that of the boy in a red vest sitting on the steps in front of the house in an almost colorless autumn landscape. And happy ones, on which you can see them licking dough. The emotional state of the children is conveyed with small lines. [...] The Swedish The creative couple Nilsson and Eriksson proves after The best funerals in the world and As Grandma Strangely, his art in literature for smaller children became again. Hardly anyone imitates the hardship of children's life without taking it lightly.

The best singer in the world

  • Christine Paxmann in the dog-ear : "In keeping with the tradition of good Swedish child-minding literature, infinite attention is paid to the child's own ego. Perhaps a child is often not yet able to formulate what scares them, for example when performing in front of an audience. According to Ulf Nilsson's story, cheeky and lovingly colored by Eva Eriksson, many a child could better describe their own feelings. The final scenes, in which discouragement and exaggeration are close together, are also beautiful. Children's souls are vulnerable "is the great credo of this experienced author, which Ola Könnecke transposed into German with pinpoint accuracy. A book for big and small brothers and kindergarten children with no ambition to perform."

The best funerals in the world

  • Süddeutsche Zeitung : "The children often practice" saying goodbye ", so that unlike in any other picture book, the inevitable at the end of life becomes a carefree children's game, where readers can laugh from the heart, but at the same time offer serious insights."
  • Jury of the German Youth Literature Prize : "Nowadays children often die and mourn even more often in children's literature. In Ulf Nilsson's latest book, however, mourning is professionalized. In this book, illustrated by Eva Eriksson with delicate tones, you can experience a comically serious game in which three little protagonists found a "funeral company" with everything that goes with it: with mourning clothes, funeral rhymes and tears. With seriousness and expertise, the children search their immediate surroundings and bumblebees, mice, hamsters or sour herring - find them all their dignified final resting place. Nilsson leads through this game with a light hand and shows how the children imitate and satirize adult behavior patterns. Ole Könnecke's translation pointedly hits the playful and serious tone of the text. "

The cheeky crow

  • Jury of the German Youth Literature Prize : "Two children get involved in a fight with a crow that eats" their "cherries from the tree. Only when they have finally overpowered the crow are the children ready to share and happy that they have the bird For all the drama of the stories, which will be fun for the readers, the text and illustration also convey a symbolic message: the cherry tree is a rich cosmos that does not belong to anyone alone, the crow a sign of strange, unavailable life that it one has to pay attention.
