Birgitta Kicherer

Birgitta Kicherer (born August 1, 1939 in Stockholm ) is a German translator .

Life

Birgitta Kicherer is the daughter of a German father and a Swedish mother. She grew up bilingual in Sweden and Germany . After a graphic studies , she worked for a time as a book illustrator until in the early seventies to Translate moved literary texts. Today Kicherer is based in Neresheim ( Ostalbkreis ).

Birgitta Kicherer is one of the most productive German translators of books for children and young people . She mainly translates from Swedish , but also from English , Danish and Norwegian .

Birgitta Kicherer is a member of the Association of German-Language Translators of Literary and Scientific Works . In 1993 she was awarded the Christoph Martin Wieland Translator Prize. After several of the works she translated had already won the German Youth Literature Prize , in 1999 Kicherer received a special prize for her entire work. In May 2017 Birgitta Kicherer received a DÜF grant for the translation of Tove Jansson's novel “City of the Sun”. This enabled her to work in a privileged way, which in this book on aging benefited the particularly important subtle humor of the text.
