Maria Gripe

Maria Gripe (born July 25, 1923 in Vaxholm , † April 5, 2007 in Rönninge , Salem municipality ) was a Swedish writer .

Maria Gripe studied philosophy and the history of religion and is now one of the most important Scandinavian children's book authors alongside Astrid Lindgren .

Life

Maria Gripe was born Maria Walter in Vaxholm, but moved to Örebro when she was six . After living there for a few years, she moved to Stockholm , where she graduated from high school and studied at Stockholm University.

In 1946 she married the artist Harald Gripe , who illustrated most of the covers of her books. The two have a daughter, Camilla Gripe , who works as a writer and translator.

Maria Gripe wrote 38 books that have been translated into 29 languages. Her last book was published in 1997. Many of her books were also made into films.

She died on April 5, 2007 after a long illness.
