The Gruppo degli Otto ("the group of eight") was an Italian artist group. The group was sometimes called: " Otto pittori italiani " (" Eight Italian painters "), or " Gruppo degli otto Pittori Italiani ".

The group included eight Italian painters. The group was founded in 1952 as an artistic antithesis to neorealism in painting, after the " Fronte Nuovo delle Arti " movement had dissolved.

Six of the former members of the " Fronte Nuovo delle Arti ": Renato Birolli , Antonio Corpora , Ennio Morlotti , Emilio Vedova , Giuseppe Santomaso and Giulio Turcato , as well as two other painters: Afro Basaldella and Mattia Moreni founded the " Gruppo degli Otto " in 1952 in Rome.

The group exhibited together for the first time at the Venice Biennale in 1952. The artists of the " Gruppo degli Otto " were also represented at documenta 1 in 1955 and in 1959 at documenta 2 in Kassel . Some also exhibited at documenta III (1964). (Giulio Turcato was only represented at d2 ).

The group of artists was coordinated by the art historian Lionello Venturi (1885–1961). This describes the style of the group as " abstract - concrete". The artist's style was based on the tradition from around 1910 and included cubism , expressionism and abstraction . Geometric and post-cubist forms dominated the group's painting.

In the 1950s, the works of Birollis, Corporas and Morlotti were more influenced by Informel and Tachism .

The painters Santomaso and Vedova were more inspired by Hans Hartung and Wols . Afro Basaldella's art played a special role with its form of expression of lyrical abstraction .
