Vaxholm is the capital of the Swedish municipality of the same name . The city with 4849 inhabitants (2015) is located in the province of Stockholm County or the historical province of Uppland .
Vaxholm is located on Vaxön , an island in the Stockholm archipelago , and is a popular destination for Stockholmers as most of the ferry lines in the Stockholm archipelago cross here and there are bus connections from Stockholm. In addition to the mostly commercially operated ferries, there is also the free ferry service from the Trafikverkets to the neighboring island of Rindö .
history
Vaxholm is one of the 134 Swedish cities with historical city status. It was granted city rights in 1652.
The main attraction is the castle, which was built to guard Stockholm from the seaside. The first fortification was built during the reign of Gustav Wasa . The fort received its present form in the 19th century.
