Rindö is an island ( Swedish ö ) or skerry in the Swedish province of Stockholm County and the historic province of Uppland .
The island in the municipality of Vaxholm is about five kilometers long and 446 hectares in size. About 1000 people live on it, in the towns of Rindöby and fortress Oskar-Fredriksborg as well as in holiday homes . There are ferry connections to Vaxholm and Värmdö and a bridge to the island of Skarpö .
history
The island has been used for military purposes since the time of Gustav Vasa . In 1709 cannon positions were built on the eastern side and a year later on the western side. Until 2005, the amphibious regiment of the Swedish armed forces was stationed on Rindö , which has since been moved to Berga in the Haninge municipality .
Fort Rindö Redutt is located in the west of the island . It was built between 1858 and 1863 to complement Vaxholm Fortress . At this point, preparatory work for a fortified tower began in 1839, but the work was stopped due to the high costs of the blasting work. Deep trenches surround the fort, and its location allowed cannon fire in all directions. Since 1935 the facility has had the status of a Swedish building monument .
