Bo Gustaf Bertelsson Carpelan (born October 25, 1926 in Helsinki , † February 11, 2011 in Espoo ) was a Finnish-Swedish writer, literary critic and translator.

Life

Carpelan studied literary history at the University of Helsinki . His writing career began in 1946 with the book of poems Som en Dunkel värme . Between 1949 and 1964 he worked as a literary critic for the newspaper Hufvudstadsbladet . From 1964–1980 Carpelan was the deputy library director of Helsinki City Library. In 1973 his first novel, Rösterna i den sena timmen, was published . In addition to volumes of poetry and novels, his literary work also includes a number of children's books.

Carpelan has published about twenty collections of poetry. In acknowledgments it is always emphasized that Carpelan developed his existentialist, at the same time very poetic style early and largely independently. However, there are influences from Swedish modernism and particularly from the Finnish-Swedish poet Gunnar Björling; Politics and ideologies are far from Carpelans.

The novel Axel from 1986 (translated into German by Klaus-Jürgen Liedtke) is Carpelan's best-known work and has received several awards. The focus is on the author's great-uncle, Axel Carpelan, one of the composer's best friends, Jean Sibelius . Carpelan worked on this book for 16 years. Carpelan received Finlandia awards for the novels Urwind (1993) and Berg (2005) .
