Chaireas

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Chaireas was an ancient Greek historian . He lived in the 3rd / 2nd Century BC Chr.

Nothing is known about Chaireas and his work. It is only mentioned briefly by Polybios in his histories together with the historian Sosylos . Both were evidently Hannibal historians , against whom Polybius polemicized: their descriptions were not credible and little more than chatter.

The chaireas' credibility cannot be assessed due to the complete loss of his work. But since a papyrus fragment from the work of Sosylus has survived and this contains valuable information, Polybius's judgment must be viewed with skepticism. His polemical criticism is presumably due to the very likely pro-Carthaginian attitude of both authors.
