Kerstin Thorvall
Kerstin Hilma Margareta Thorvall (born August 12, 1925 in Eskilstuna , † April 9, 2010 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish writer , illustrator and journalist .
Life
Kerstin Thorvall was trained as a fashion illustrator from 1945 to 1947 and made her debut as a writer in 1959 with the book Boken till dig (“The book for you”). In the early days of her work, Thorvall illustrated not only her own books for children and young people, but also a number of others, including Kalle Blomkvist och Rasmus ("Kalle Blomkvist and Rasmus") by Astrid Lindgren , which was published in 1953. Later she wrote mostly for adults and worked as a columnist for the Swedish weekly newspaper Vecko-Revyn and the monthly newspaper Damernas Värld from 1966 to 1975.
In her open-hearted descriptions, including about female sexuality , such as in the autobiographical work Det mest förbjudna (“Everything was forbidden”, 1976), she aroused a “moral panic” in the 1970s and was thus one of the most criticized but also Sweden's most widely read writers. Thorvalls literary works have been increasingly valued over the years, especially through a memoir-like novel trilogy , the first part of which När man skjuter arbetare… (“Dress the sky in darkness”) from 1993 dealt with the parents' marriage. For this she received the Moa Prize. The second part I skuggan av oron ("Where life begins") from 1995 tells of her relationship with her mother after her father's death. In part three, Från Signe till Alberte (“In the light of a new day”) from 1998, her life as a wife and mother is treated.
Thorvall, who became the mother of four sons, was primarily a novelist of many critically acclaimed books. But she also created some illustrations.
