Even her debut En ö i havet from 1996 (Eng. An island in the sea , 1998) was enthusiastically received by critics and readers. In 1996 the novel for young people was nominated for Sweden's highest literary prize, the August Prize , and was awarded the German Prize for Young People in 1999. "An Island in the Sea" is the first of four novels in which the author tells the story of the Jewish sisters Steffi and Nelli, who were sent into exile in Sweden by their parents from Vienna in 1939 to protect them from persecution by the National Socialists . In her tetralogy she follows the two girls through their teenage years and describes the sometimes difficult, sometimes carefree everyday life of the refugee children. By describing the events from the perspective of her protagonists, human virtues and viciousness become both alive and understandable. At the same time as the award-winning film adaptation by Christina Olofson, for which Annika Thor wrote the award-winning screenplay, her novel “Sanning eller konsekvens” (German: “I could have said no”, 1998) was published in 1997, which was awarded the August Prize in Sweden and is one of the most important literary contributions on the subject of bullying among school students.

From the perspective of twelve-year-old Nora, who fears that she has lost her best friend to Fanny and her clique and doesn’t want to “mess” with the unpopular Karin, the author tells of peer pressure, fear of exclusion and the wickedness of everyday school life. Annika Thor develops a sensitive, never humiliating didactic piece that, without any kind of schoolwork, calls on people to be treated with respect and to take responsibility for their own actions.

Annika Thor's first children's book “Rött hjärta blå fjäril” (2002; Eng. “A red heart, a blue butterfly”), the charming love story between primary school students Alva and Love, was published in German in 2003 and was nominated for the 2004 German Youth Literature Prize. The story is continued in “Pirr i magen, klump i halsen” (2003, Eng. “A rabbit for Alva”, 2005), which describes in a bittersweet way how Alva and Love split up, but their friendship because of their mutual interest is preserved in rabbits. As a screenwriter, Thor adapted her tetralogy about Steffi and Nelli, which was broadcast as a four-part series in December 2003 on Swedish television. Previously she worked with the Swedish director Christina Olofson for four films as a screenwriter, including I could say no and Hannah med H .
