Matti Risto Tapio Hagman (born September 21, 1955 in Helsinki ; † October 11, 2016 in Espoo ) was a Finnish ice hockey player who played for the HIFK Helsinki and Reipas Lahti in the SM-liiga as well as the Boston Bruins and from 1972 to 1992 Edmonton Oilers has played in the National Hockey League .
Hagman's son Niklas is also a professional ice hockey player. His sister Riitta Salin won the 400-meter run at the European Athletics Championships in Rome in 1974 .
Career
Matti Hagman began his career as a hockey player at HIFK Helsinki , for whom he was active from 1972 to 1976, initially in the SM-sarja and from 1975 in its successor league, the SM-liiga . During this time he was selected in the NHL Amateur Draft 1975 in the sixth round as the 104th player by the Boston Bruins and in the WHA Amateur Draft 1975 in the third round as the 43rd player of the New England Whalers . In 1974 the striker became Finnish champion for the first time with HIFK . Before the 1976/77 season Hagman received a contract with the Boston Bruins, for which he scored 28 scorer points, including eleven goals, in 75 games in his first NHL season. In the course of the following season, Hagman moved to the Québec Nordiques from the World Hockey Association , before he returned to his Finnish homeland after two years in North America.
In Finland, the attacker received another contract with HIFK Helsinki, for which he played for two years and with which he became champions for the second time in 1980. In the 1979/80 season Hagman was the best goalscorer, best assists, best scorer and "key player" of the SM-liiga . He then tried it a second time in North America , where he ran for two seasons for the Edmonton Oilers . He then signed again in Finland with HIFK, with whom he became champion for the third time in 1983. After three years with the Finns, he moved to EV Landshut in the ice hockey Bundesliga for the 1985/86 season . In his first and only station in other European countries, the attacker scored 77 points, including 26 goals, in 39 games.
After only one year, Hagman moved again to the HIFK, for which he was active in the SM-liiga until 1989. After two seasons with Reipas Lahti , he ended in 1992 with the club where he started his professional career. With 750 points, Hagman is after Arto Javanainen (792) the second best scorer in the history of the SM-liiga .
Following his career, Hagman was honored by his longtime club HIFK Helsinki by banning his jersey number 20.
Hagman died in Espoo on October 11, 2016 at the age of 61 .
International
For Finland , Hagman took part in the A World Championships in 1975 , 1976 , 1978 and 1983 . He was also in Finland's squad at the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck .
