Arto Javanainen (born April 8, 1959 in Pori , † January 25, 2011 in Turku ) was a Finnish ice hockey player who played for Ässät Pori and TPS Turku in the SM-liiga and for the Pittsburgh Penguins in the National Hockey League from 1975 to 1994 has played.
Career
Arto Javanainen began his career as a hockey player with Ässät Pori , for which he was initially active in the SM-liiga from 1975 to 1984 . During this time he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 1983 in the sixth round as a total of 118th player by the Montréal Canadiens . A year later, the Finn has drafted a second time, this time the elected him Pittsburgh Penguins in the 1984 NHL Entry Draft in the fifth round as a total of 85 players. In the 1984/85 season , the attacker finally made his debut in the National Hockey League for the Penguins, where he could not prevail, so he mainly played for their farm team , the Baltimore Skipjacks from the American Hockey League . At the end of his year-long stay in North America, Javanainen had five scorer points, including one goal, in 14 NHL games.
Before the 1984/85 season Javanainen returned to his ex-club Ässät Pori, for which he was active the following two seasons. Two years at TPS Turku followed , with which he won his only Finnish championship title in 1989 . Javanainen then returned to Ässät Pori, where he ended his career in 1994.
Following his career, Javanainen was honored with induction into the Finnish Hockey Hall of Fame in 2000 . In addition, Ässät Pori, where he had spent most of his career, blocked his jersey number 4.
Javanainen died on January 25, 2011 in Turku after a long and serious illness at the age of 51.
International
For Finland Javanainen took part in the Junior World Championships in 1977 , 1978 and 1979 and the A-World Championships in 1982 and 1983 . He was also in Finland's squad at the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo .
