Paul Malone Gardner (born March 5, 1956 in Fort Erie , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and current coach , who was under contract as a coach at the Löwen Frankfurt in the DEL2 until March 2018 . His father Cal , brother Dave and nephew Ryan were also professional ice hockey players.
Career
As a player
Paul Gardner began his career as a hockey player with the Oshawa Generals , for whom he was active from 1974 to 1976 in the Ontario Hockey Association . He was then selected first in the WHA Amateur Draft 1976 in the third round as the 24th player of the Toronto Toros , and then in the NHL Amateur Draft 1976 in the first round as the eleventh player by the Kansas City Scouts . Then he took the Colorado Rockies , the successor team of the Kansas City Scouts, the attacker under contract, for whom he played from 1976 to 1979 in the National Hockey League . Then Gardner was under contract for a year for their league rivals, the Toronto Maple Leafs , and four years for the Pittsburgh Penguins . In the 1984/85 season , the Canadian was active for the Washington Capitals in the NHL, but played most of the season for their farm team from the American Hockey League , the Binghamton Whalers . In the 1986/87 season , the center ended his NHL career with the Buffalo Sabers . He also played for their AHL farm team, the Rochester Americans .
As a trainer
After Gardner was under contract as the head coach of the Newmarket Saints in the American Hockey League from 1986 to 1990 , he then worked for their league rivals, in the 1992/93 season with the Baltimore Skipjacks , and from 1993 to 1997 with their successor team, the Portland Pirates , for whom he ran again in the AHL in the 1996/97 season. In 1994 Gardner also played in five games, in which he scored a total of seven scorer points, for the New England Stingers from Roller Hockey International .
From 1998 to 2003, the Canadian was assistant coach with the Nashville Predators in the National Hockey League , before he was employed as chief scout with the Predators in the following two years . After the former NHL player had coached Lokomotive Yaroslavl in the Russian Super League in the 2007/08 season , he took over the position of head coach of the Hamburg Freezers from the German Ice Hockey League on December 18, 2008 from Bill Stewart and reached with the Hanseatic the playoff quarter-finals, where they lost 4-0 to the Eisbären Berlin . In the 2009/10 season, the Freezers were penultimate under Gardner's leadership, his contract was not extended afterwards.
From December 2010, Gardner was with the Mississippi RiverKings from the Central Hockey League on the gang and replaced Kevin Kaminski as head coach. For the 2011/12 season , the Bloomington Blaze hired him in the same role. In January 2013 he replaced Jordan Krestanovich with the Braehead Clan from the Elite Ice Hockey League as head coach.
For the 2013/14 season, the Canadian was hired by the Tilburg Trappers from the Eredivisie as head coach. During his two-year tenure in Tilburg, Gardner led the team twice to a "double" from the Dutch championship title and cup victory. In January 2016 Paul Gardner was introduced as the new trainer of the DEL2 team Lausitzer Füchse in Weißwasser . He stayed in office until the end of the 2015/16 season, in which he led the Füchse to relegation.
On June 29, 2016, Gardner was introduced as the new coach of the German second division club Löwen Frankfurt . There he formed the sporting leadership duo with sporting director Rich Chernomaz . Gardner led the Lions to win the DEL2 championship title in 2017. On March 17, 2018, shortly after the Frankfurt team fell behind with 0-2 wins in the playoff quarter-finals against Kassel, the Lions parted ways with Gardner. "Based on statements by Gardner to the media in connection with the sporting situation, the Löwen Frankfurt are forced to act and have released the 62-year-old," the club justified the move. Under his leadership, the lions had previously completed the main round 2017/18 as third in the table.
Personal
Gardner has five children.
The Canadian is known for his sometimes extravagant ties that he wears during the games.
