The Kansas City Scouts ( IPA : [ˈkænzəs sɪtɪ ˈskaʊts] ) were an ice hockey team in the North American Ice Hockey League National Hockey League based in Kansas City , Missouri . Founded in 1974, the team moved to Denver , Colorado in 1976 and played under the name Colorado Rockies in the NHL. Since moving to New Jersey in 1982, the team has been called the New Jersey Devils .
history
In June 1972, Kansas City was awarded an NHL franchise . The first idea for the team name was "Kansas City MO-Hawks", as a reference to the fact that the metropolitan area around Kansas City is located in both the state of Kansas and the state of Missouri . But the proposal was rejected by a veto by the Chicago Blackhawks . The decision was made for the second proposal, "Kansas City Scouts".
In the 1974/75 season , the team together with another expansion team , the Washington Capitals , started playing in the NHL. The Capitals set an NHL record for the worst season in league history, and the Scouts didn't do much better. Adding these two teams to the league was quickly seen as a mistake.
The sporting success failed to materialize and rising oil prices made it difficult economically for the franchise in the American Midwest. In 1975/76 it looked like the Scouts had a chance at the playoffs . By the end of 1975 they were only one point away from a qualifying spot. But then came the crash and you played the remaining 44 games disastrously. Only one win out of 35 defeats jumped out for the team. The only player on the team to lead in a standings was Steve Durbano , who received the most penalty minutes in the league. The attempt to keep the team on course, at least financially, also failed. Instead of the 8,000 cards they had hoped for, they could only sell 2,000, and the team's owners squeezed debts of $ 900,000.
This led to the decision to relocate the franchise to Denver , Colorado , where the team would play under the name Colorado Rockies .
